The plot shows the graph of the number of new users in the Mastodon platform as a function of the date for the last months. It can be seen that until Musk's purchase was completed, the daily new users were about one thousand. It jumped to twenty-five <br />thousand during the first migration to Mastodon, just after the Musk's purchase of Twitter was completed on October 27. A second jump to 100k new users per day happened in the second wave, just after the massive layoffs in Twitter on Nov 4th. Finally the <br />third jump to almost 150k per day happened after Musk's Twitter 2.0 ultimatum on Nov 17th. After that the number of users per day went down to 50k per day for the last week.

Update on the growth of #mastodon in the last months. After the big wave of new accounts on Nov 17th, the growth seems steady for the last week at around 50k new accounts/users per day. Only in the last couple of weeks, 1M new accounts were added. At this rhythm, #mastodon will get 1.5M accounts/users per month.

Hubzilla's Directory needs some love. And discipline.

Why does the #Hubzilla directory show me the same people over and over? If I don't want to connect with them the first time, I probably still don't the fifth.

Maybe it's just that there are so few users.

Devs: please add a "Stop showing me this person" button. The presence of a Dubai escort agency in the top ten directory results is embarrassing and off-putting.

How do I tag Hubzilla's devs, anyway? The directory is so slow that I don't have the patience to really drill into it.

One thing should be noted is that there are different directory servers, with different lists of users.

Hubzilla, by default, puts all new users in the Hubzilla directory. Streams puts their users in a different directory. And it is possible to start your own directory as well.

Being listed in a directory just determines whether you show up on a hub's directory or not. All accounts are still compatible with all of the other hubs.

I haven't decided yet, but my websites might have a separate shared directory. Since I plan on commercializing most of my websites, I would like to have control over who shows up in the directory on my websites.

So, keep in mind, directories are not a list of all users who use this technology. And people can choose not to be listed in any directory for privacy.

Do you have any experience that suggests changing directory servers might enable me to find more English language people with relatively well balanced brain chemistry who post more than once a month?

As far as I know, all directory servers in Hubzilla show the same directory of users. There are multiple directory servers for each directory.

I only noticed in the code that it is possible to set up a different directory, and noticed that Streams uses a different directory. I am not sure if there are other ones.

It should be noted that if you have the pubcrawl addon activated, you can interact with anyone on Mastodon or any ActivityPub-enabled platform. They won't show up in the directory, but you can connect and follow them anyway.

Trying to understand permissions. Seems there's no way to make something public AFTER you post it. Which I suppose I can understand. I had to make a post to find the lock icon!

But how does the "public" setting work when you have to log in before you can see any part of a hubzilla site?

If you make the post public, anyone can see it, even those who are not logged in. If you set it to "friends" then only those on your friends list can see it.
